FAMILY PEACE IMPERILED AT THIRD
AO CLASSIC
(AP, Key Largo FL, G. Calder reporting)
Husbands and Wives. The very cornerstone of American Society came
under fire on Thursday December 14, 2004 at the third annual America
Outdoors Volleyball Classic Tournament at the stadium.
Record crowds gathered as the 45 players on 9 teams vied for the
coveted third edition of the internationally known beach-volleyball
championships.
The 3:00 p.m. championship game saw the SCREAMING GECKO'S taking on
the LAST DOGS.
A husband, Gary Risbridger, and a wife, Barbara Mueller, of the DOGS
were pitted in battle against their own spouses across the net -- Anita
Risbridger and Gary Mueller of the GECKO'S.
Low mutterings of: "Yeah, you'll get yours ... in a pig's ear..." and, "Cook
your own damn ..." were barely discernible through the screams of the crowd
and the "WHACK" of the ball against fingers, palms and fists. Sand flew and
shorts slipped as the DOGS built up an early 7-2 lead. The DOGS,
cobbled together from the rejects of the first-team-out and a couple of guys
found drinking under the pier, had to beat the so-far-unbeaten GECKO'S
twice to win the double elimination tourney.
Never got the first one. After a delay caused by the mid-game
departure of GECKO Tony Baradic (rumored to have been called to
active national guard duty by an on-site, no-nonsense drill sergeant) the
GECKO'S played better with their remaining four players than they had
with five. They turned it around on the hapless DOGS and won going
away 15 - 11.
Gary Mueller was the press corps MVP and the selfsame Tony Baradic
won the nod for rookie of the year as no single act by a player did
more to inspire his team than that of Baradic. |
